The former national coach raves about Müller as a “communicator” and reveals: Sometimes it was too much. However, he believes that his former protégé is preserved.
Thomas Müller is about to Bayern’s last home game. But the former national coach Joachim Löw is convinced that the 35-year-old will be preserved. “I’m sure we will see him in football,” said Löw of the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”.
Löw and Müller combine a long time together in the DFB team. The ex-national coach not only remembered Müller as an outstanding player. He was also “unique” as a personality. The relationship was always “very good and very personal”. Even today, both are regularly in exchange.
Löw was particularly impressed by Müller’s effect within the team. He explained: “If Thomas was in the cabin, the temperature changed.” Müller was able to reach his teammates in different ways – before the kick -off, at half -time, also to calm down. For Löw, Müller was one of the players “who are so important for a cabin”.
Another aspect was Müller’s joy of communication – sometimes too pronounced. Löw remembered training situations in which he had to brake: “Thomas, now be quiet! You don’t have to comment on everything.”
Löw still employs the decision of 2019, Müller, Mats Hummels and Jérôme Boateng after the disappointing World Cup 2018 for the national team.
In retrospect, he described this measure as a “unfortunate episode” and admitted: “We didn’t implement it well. From today’s perspective.” He took back Müller and Hummels at the European Championships in 2021, but was the end of the round of the 16 against England (0: 2), Löw then returned.
Müller faces two last appearances in the Bayern jersey: On Saturday, the Borussia Mönchengladbach club welcomes the Allianz Arena before going to TSG Hoffenheim a week later. The club World Cup is also coming up in summer. It has so far been open whether the veteran will continue his career.
