Queen: In the end, Freddie Mercury had control over his life again
An archive classic from February 27, 2020.
It has been almost 30 years since Freddie Mercury died of the consequences of his HIV disease. On November 24, 1991 he lost his fight – and the world mourned on this day for an icon of rock music. Peter Freestone was an assistant to the singer and accompanied him to the end. He saw how Mercury continued to break away physically and now revealed details about the last two weeks of the Queen front man in an interview. He also tells of a serious decision that Mercury made.
“At least that gave him the feeling of having control over his life again, even though he knew that the disease would kill him”
Until shortly before his death, Mercury had continued music and tried to hide his state of health as much as possible. Just a few months before his death, he made one last video with “Thesis Are The Days of our Lives”. There everyone seemed to be clear that the singer no longer has to live for long.
His assistant Freestone spoke in the program “Lorrain” about Mercury’s AIDS disease-and a decision that the eccentric front man made two weeks before his death. “He knew exactly what would happen. Two weeks before his death, he decided to stop his medication that has received him alive. That at least gave him the feeling of having control over his life again, even though he knew that the disease would kill him.”
Freddie Mercury remains a generations of overarching icon
Queen are currently with Adam Lambert as a singer on a big world tour. The film “Bohemian Rhapsody”, which deals with the legendary Live Aid concert of the group, there is a real retro wave and the band may be more present than ever. Freddie Mercury remains a generations overarching icon.
