According to Sain, on January 7, a car with four children was driving along Seifullin Street in Alma-Ata. At the intersection with Satpayev Street, the car came under fire. As a result, a 4-year-old girl died.

The day before, Sain reported that an 11-year-old child had died from a shot in Alma-Ata. He walked with his parents on January 5 and came under fire. A 15-year-old teenager was also injured and was hospitalized with severe gunshot wounds. The car in which he was traveling with his father was fired upon.

The protests in Kazakhstan began on January 2 after the price of liquefied gas doubled. Eyewitnesses in Alma-Ata told RBC that the protesters demanded not only lower prices for gas and utilities, higher wages and pensions, but also a change of regime and reforms.
