Lena Oberdorf has not yet played a game for FC Bayern due to injury. Is it enough for the European Championship with Germany? Your club remains skeptical – unlike the national coach.
The hope of returning from Lena Oberdorf to the European Championship lives on. The national player has not played a game since her cruciate ligament rupture last summer, but national coach Christian Wück does not want to write off yet.
“It would be negligent if we were already closed the door,” said Wück during the half-time break of the DFB Cup final in the ARD. “We still have eight weeks now.” Oberdorf had injured himself before the Olympic Games and has failed since then.
Wück emphasized that the final decision was not at the DFB or the club, but with the player. “At some point she will make a decision. The decision will not make me, not even FC Bayern. She will meet it alone,” said the coach. And further: “Because she knows her body. She can decide whether it will work or not.” Oberdorf need to know if she trusts her knee.
At Bayern Munich, on the other hand, the last more reserved. Sports director Bianca Rech had explained before the final on ZDF that Oberdorf was back in training, but was not yet ready for the competition. “It is like this today: she is back in team training, but is absolutely not up to a stand where you can say that she can play a European championship at the present time,” said the 44-year-old.
Since moving from VfL Wolfsburg to FC Bayern, Oberdorf has been waiting for her first competitive game in the new jersey. The European Championship will take place in Switzerland this summer from July 2 to 27.
