The carmaker Mercedes-Benz wants to build another model in his US plant in view of the US import tariffs.
From 2027, a new vehicle of the mid-range segment “Core” should be produced in Tuscaloosa (Alabama), Mercedes-Benz said on Thursday. According to their own statements, the Stuttgarters also want to underline their commitment to the US market. The “Core” segment with models such as the E-Class and the compact SUV GLC is the largest segment at Mercedes. Mercedes did not say which model should be produced in Tuscaloosa.
CEO Ola Källenius had already promised to expand in the USA the day before – and also to throw this into balance with the US government in discussions with the US government. “It is a natural step to bring another model to Alabama,” said Källenius, according to the announcement. “This is part of our strategy to deepen our commitment in the United States”.
Mercedes employs more than 6,000 people in Tuscaloosa and mainly produces the large SUV models GLS and GLE as well as their electrical variants. Many of these cars are also exported. Last year, around 260,000 cars ran off the assembly line in the plant. Mercedes sold a total of almost 325,000 cars on the important US market.
