The raven is rare in the Netherlands and that is why the development is well kept. In Norg, young ravens were removed from the nest today at high altitudes. The ravens were at the top of a high -voltage pylon. In a large shopping bag they were brought down by a few men from TenneT.
Annemarie Loof of the Ravenswerkgroep Nederland was allowed to rings independently for the first time. Last year she took the exam for that. “We give them a metal ring and a color ring,” says Loof. “That metal ring is a kind of social security number. All birds must have such a ring. The color ring is a lot bigger, so that we can read it from a greater distance.”
The rings of the ravens attracted a lot of attention, because it is pretty special. For a long time the birds were no longer found in the Netherlands, because a lot was hunted. Only since 2003 do Raven have been living in Drenthe again. Around twenty litters are now known.
The birds are ringed so that their migration patterns can be traced.
The neighbors of Natuurplaats Noordsche Veld keep a close eye on the nest in the high -voltage pylon. “I am so happy now,” says Natalia Sieljes, who came to look at the rings with two colleagues. She has a young raven on her lap. “We follow this nest for the third year in a row. This is the first time I can be so close. And that is on me. I don’t know if I experience this again. So I think it’s very special.”
Annemarie was more than satisfied with the conditions of the four ravens in Norg. “It went super well with them. They are well fed by the parents. They were good on weight and customized. A few more weeks on the nest and then they will hopefully discover Drenthe.”
Young ravens were also ringed today in the Onlanden.
