Last summer Mats Hummels and BVB went separate paths. It may now be reunified – but only under certain conditions.

Mats Hummels could support Borussia Dortmund again in the upcoming World Cup in summer-but only if there are personnel bottlenecks. This was explained by the long-time BVB managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke on Saturday evening in the “current sports studio” of ZDF.

Accordingly, the idea came up internally to bring the 36-year-old back back to AS Rome after his year. However, Watzke admitted that the chances were smaller than the risks.

“Currently, however, a few players are in front, and who have won the games for the past few weeks now, they are not going voluntarily and say that now we’re going to sit down because the mats is there for five weeks now,” said the 65-year-old. It was agreed: If a defensive player is injured and not being able to take part in the club world championship, Hummels is the first alternative.

The club World Cup in the USA runs from June 15th to July 13th and also serves as a test run for the 2026 World Cup, which is also held in the United States as well as Canada and Mexico. For the first time, 32 teams take part in the club tournament, from Germany Bavaria Munich and Borussia Dortmund are there.

The BVB had not extended the Hummels contract a year ago. The 2014 world champion should still get a big farewell – probably in August in a game against Athletic Bilbao. This confirmed Watzke and emphasized: “The Mats is one of the greatest players that Borussia Dortmund has ever had.”

Hummels had run for Dortmund between 2008 and 2016 and 2019 and 2023. His last game in the BVB dress was the final of the Champions League against Real Madrid (0: 2) in the Wembley Stadium.
