Today is 75 years since the Republic of the South Moluccas – Republik Maluku Selatan, RMS in short – was proclaimed. Among other things, the Moluccan community in Hoogeveen thought.

April 25 is a holiday for Moluccans because the birthday of the Republic is celebrated. People who have given their lives for their country are also commemorated. The history is passed on from generation to generation and is still alive.

That is also apparent in Hoogeveen. The program in the Moluccan neighborhood started last night with a wreath laying at the Moluccan monument on Pottingastraat. It is an important part of the commemoration of the Moluccan community. In addition, mayor Martijn Breukelman and alderman Mark Tuit of the municipality of Hoogeveen. They put a rose at the monument.

Subsequently there was a church service, the national anthem was sung and finally young people watched the flag over the night, this morning at 6 am. That happened under the supervision of a drum and a marching group. The proclamation was also read, as happened for the first time 75 years ago.
