Co-favorite Carlos Alcaraz misses the ATP Masters in Madrid due to injury. The two-time title holder from Spain declared his waiver of the home event on Friday.
In the final of the tournament in Barcelona, which he had lost in two sets against the Danes Holger Rune, Alcaraz suffered an injury to the adductors. The 21-year-old also complains of pain in the left foot.
Alcaraz, who wants to prepare for the title defense at the French Open (from May 25th) after recovery, spoke of a precaution: “I did everything that was in my hands, but it hasn’t really improved in the past few days”said the four times Grand Slam-Winner. At the Masters in Rome, he could already open again.
The Spaniard had recently won the Masters 1000 event in Monte-Carlo and has shown himself in a strong constitution in the current clay court season. Last year Alcaraz won the French Open in the final in five sets against Germany’s top player Alexander Zverev.
Zverev new favorite?
Zverev remains one big competitor less in the hunt for his third title in the Spanish capital. The world ranking list of Jannik Sinner (Italy) also misses the tournament – because of his doping lock, which was still valid until the beginning of May. Grand Slam record winner Novak Djokovic from Serbia, on the other hand, starts in Madrid.
