Three bankruptcies in series
Hannover 96 separates from coach Breitenreiter

Hannover 96 reacted to the ongoing sporting descent. Coach André Breitenreiter has to go – and that before the end of the season.
His contract would have expired at the end of the season anyway, now André Breitenreiter has to go earlier. As Hannover 96 announced on Wednesday afternoon, the paths of the club and head coach separate with immediate effect. The 51-year-old and 96 managing director Marcus Mann agreed on this mutually, according to the club announcement.
Breitenreiter had only taken over the coaching office at the end of December 2024 and has only won three victories in 13 second division games with the team since then. “Unfortunately, in too many games we have not managed to convert really good performances into victories,” he says of the decision. The separation is therefore “logical and consistent.”
Managing Director Mann complained in particular the success in the recent weeks. Hanover had all lost the last three games and had fallen back to ten in the table. The development “no longer went in the right direction”, said Mann.
He also stated: “According to the results of the past few weeks, it is clear: We have to look at the new season from now on and will also change in the summer position in summer.”
In the remaining four games of the season, the previous assistant coach Lars Barlemann, U19 coach Dirk Lottner and U17 coach Christian Schulz will look after the team. However, this should only be an interim solution. Thomas Kleine, who joined Hannover 96 with Breitenreiter in winter, no longer belongs to the staff.
