The filming of Quentin Tarantino’s shimmering Nazi comedy “Inglourious Basterds” has been gone for more than 15 years. In addition to the cleverly pointed dialogues, the abundance and quality of the top -class actors were particularly responsible for the success of the film.

Christoph Waltz in particular caused enthusiasm in the role of the sociopathic SS officer Hans Landa and may also have surprised his colleagues. Some of them knew Waltz, who was previously audible in German television productions, namely hardly or not at all. In an interview, director Tarantino now revealed that it was precisely this fact when filming a joke.

“I don’t want you to be bad, but …”

“I met Christoph before we came to the big screenplay reading with the cast,” admitted Tarantino In the “The Moment” podcast. In order to lure the other actors out of the reserve, Tarantino Waltz asked to initially hide his full potential for the first rehearsals.

“I told him,” said the director, “‘I don’t do that to play a perverse game. Everyone is so curious about who plays Hans Landa. I don’t want you to be bad when reading the screenplay, but I want you to do a lot.”

Christoph Waltz received an Oscar and other awards for his role as Hans Landa.

No rehearsals with colleagues

In addition, Tarantino admitted that Waltz also kept away from shared rehearsals with acting college such as Brad Pitt and Diane Kruger. Instead, he should go through his dialogues personally with the director until the start of the filming. Only the rehearsals with Denis Ménochet, who was supposed to play the tension -charged opening scene with Waltz, allowed Tarantino.

The actual filming with Waltz should therefore still be well remembered by most of his colleagues. The 64-year-old embodied his role so authentically that he then joined four other international trophies next to the Oscar for the best supporting role.

“Inglourious Basterds” was released in August 2009 and became the most successful Tarantino film to date. The comedy included over $ 200 million. There was also a golden palm and several other awards.
