Despite eight German participants

After Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern had to delete the sails in the quarter -finals of the Champions League, Eintracht Frankfurt also resigned in the Europa League. Last year, the Bundesliga fought for an additional space for the premier class with strong performance on European stage, now not a German team in a European semi -finals for the first time in 2021. The European Cup season started in the preliminary round.
Already in the preliminary round of the Champions League, the adventure for VfB Stuttgart and RB Leipzig was over. While the Swabians fought to move into the intermediate round until the end, the departure for the disappointing Saxons was already determined prematurely. In the Europa League it was TSG Hoffenheim that missed the leap into the intermediate round and finished 27th with nine points from eight games.
Only Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League and Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League made the leap below the first eight and were able to avoid the intermediate round. FC Bayern defeated Celtic Glasgow there, BVB prevailed against Sporting, while the 1st FC Heidenheim was eliminated against FC Copenhagen at Conference League. Four German teams were in the round of 16, where there was the direct duel between FC Bayern and Bayer Leverkusen with the happier end for the Munich. Dortmund defeated the OSC Lille and Eintracht Frankfurt the hurdle Ajax Amsterdam.
In the quarter -finals, only Eintracht Frankfurt developed a good starting point in the first leg, which a 1-1 at Tottenham took. FC Bayern lost 1-2 against Inter Milan and Dortmund at home with 0: 4 in Barcelona. In the second leg, BVB achieved a spectacular 3: 1, but they still had to delete the sails. FC Bayern did not get over a 2-2 in the San Siro and the SBU lost 0-1 in its own stadium – this is how the semi -finals take place without German participation.
Four of the last five royal class semi-finals without a German team
Last year, FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League and Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League were three German teams in the round of the last four – BVB and the Werkelf even made it into the finals, where they found Real Madrid and Atalanta Bergamo. This was rewarded with second place in the UEFA five-year classification, which brought an additional participant in the premier class for the Bundesliga. Germany is in fourth place this year, and England and Spain are at the front.
Since the 2020/21 season, at least one German team has always made it into the semi -finals of the European Cup – but in the Champions League the Bundesliga clubs have repeated problems. In the past five seasons, the round of the last four in the premier class took place four times without German participation. Bayern was an absolute constant between 2010/11 and 2019/20 and made it into the semi -finals seven times. In the Europa League, Eintracht Frankfurt 2021/22 won the title and Bayer Leverkusen made the leap under the top 4 in the past two seasons. For the second time in the Bundesliga history, eight teams started in the European Cup, three did not make it beyond the group phase and none to the semi-finals-a disappointing season on an international stage.
