The extent of the betting scandal in Italy is probably greater than expected. The son of a football legend is also said to be involved in the scandal that led to the lock of a national player.

The Italian football betting scandal draws further circles-now Nicolo Pirlo is also focusing on the investigation. According to a report by the “Corriere della Sera”, the 17-year-old son of ex-professional Andrea Pirlo (Ua Milan and Juventus) is said to have accumulated debts from illegal bets. A total of 30,000 euros.

This has apparently come from a chat dated June 7, 2022. In it, Florence professional Niccolo Fagioli wrote to Pietro Marinoni via WhatsApp-a referee from the fourth league, which, according to investigations, organized illegal bets and is the key figure of the scandal. Fagioli reported on piros debt. Papa Andrea, world champion in 2006, found everything out and then blocked his son’s account until Nicolo is of legal age. Marinoni and Fagioli are now blocked.

The Italian authorities see relationships with the Sandro Tonali case. Today’s Newcastle United professional was closed in 2023 for ten months. He had described Marinoni as the one who made him bet. At that time, Tonali said that he lived in the same city as he had and went to school with his sister. Although there were no threats, he was offered to pay his debts in installments. The sum had amounted to 500,000 euros.

So that’s not enough. The investigations by the Milan public prosecutor are currently running against twelve and former professionals from series A. In addition to Pirlo and Tonali, according to “Times”, Leonardo Paredes from Roma, ex-Juve player Ángel di María as well as the former Schalke and current Turin professional Weston McKennie are also the focus of the investigators.

Five alleged organizers of illegal betting operations have already been placed under house arrest. The investigators secured around 1.5 million euros. It has so far been open whether there will be consequences for the players involved beyond fines.
