The spectator who threw a bottle to Mathieu van der Poel on Sunday during Paris-Roubaix will receive a complaint to his pants from Wielerunie UCI and Alpecin-DECEUNINCK, the Belgian employer of Van der Poel. The winner of the classic was thrown in his face along the way. Van der Poel remained unharmed.

The UCI says there is contact with the authorities involved. “All legal means are used to investigate the case. This must ensure that this behavior is strictly and properly punished, as has always happened in the past.”

Alpecin wants to keep the further course of the legal proceedings internally: “So that the misconduct does not get more attention than it deserves.”

“I hope they will visit him,” Van der Poel said about the perpetrator on Sunday. “Getting a bottle in your face at fifty kilometers per hour is enough to break my jaw. We can’t let this pass.”
