Javier Milei does not stand out for his humility. He says that, with the support of a host of heavenly forces, Argentina will transform into an authentic economic power whose miraculous resurgence impresses both the other world leaders that virtually all will become libertarians.
In another era, such claims would have made him target of cruel mockery, but there is so much confusion in the current world that they have helped him to erect himself in an international influencer with fans on the five continents. The feeling that the sociopolitical and economic recipes that until yesterday were considered normal have failed has opened the doors for sellers of allegedly different recipes from those already tested. Of these, the most successful has been the North American Donald Trump who, a plethoric of self -confidence, has just trimmed the world commercial system.
Milei’s geopolitical and intellectual ambitions may be fantasy, but thanks to them – or despite them – for more than a year, he managed to dominate the local political scenario until, for rejection of the many who for diverse reasons they do not want it, he began to make a youth error after another. It was betrayed what the ancient Greek philosophers and playwrights called Hubris, the refusal to recognize that there are limits to which no mortal should surpass, which is so characteristic of the preachers of redemptive news.
Surrounded as it is by people who applaud their occurrences as the Kirchner seals with Cristina did, Milei was convinced that it would be easy to remode scarecrows. It does not surprise that those convicted of being subjected or marginalized do not like the scheme that members of the “iron triangle” have in mind. Thus, to anyone’s surprise, not only the Peronist senators but also some of PRO and the UCR repudiated in an ostentatious way to the still powerful federal judge Ariel Lijo, who will surely want to take revenge on those who prevented him from taking a place in the still skeletal supreme court, and humiliated the until recently respected academic Manuel García-Mansilla. Lijo was harmed by his professional and personal reputation nothing enviable, García-Mansilla for having sworn before an audience that would never think of being a member of the highest court by decree. If it had not been for these words, he could have deserved the approval of the majority since, unlike his partner, he did not face serious accusations that would have disqualified him.
Why did Milei insisted on promoting Lijo’s candidacy? While having successful does not mean that he is right in others, Milei loves to behave as an omniscient wise, a proclivity that would matter little if he was not president of the Republic but that, since it is, he affects very negatively in his management.
The expensive errors that it has perpetrated in the last weeks and that, in general terms, its strategy, based as the will to respect the fiscal balance, remains correct, but if it loses popular support that their successes in the fight against inflation has been falling, could be falling down. By the way, he cannot continue to give himself the luxury of delivering to his critics pretexts to mock him; The government that heads depends so much on the “charisma” that is attributed to it that the bulk of its political capital consists of the personal image that has been carved. Without Milei, La Libertad progresses, a group that was improvised on the march and that, of course, includes many adventurers, eccentric and opportunistic, in addition to a growing troll army, would disintegrate from night. Almost all the votes he expects to get in the nearby elections will be for Milei himself, not for the government he has assembled.
The risks thus assumptions would be less serious if the president had resisted the temptation to go for everything, thus emulating Cristina when he enjoyed a notable degree of popularity, and chose to expand his support base by accepting being the leader of a more liberal coalition than libertarian in which he would be forced to take into account the points of view of his members. In other words, the most contrary to the alternative thus raised are the mileists of the first hour, starting with their sister Karina, who are resolved to defend their conquests by the means that were, hence their willingness to keep Macri at bay and other politicians who approve the “course” set by the guru illuminated without therefore take their mystical extravagances.
While the attempt of the Mileists to seize the Porteño of the Pro could give them some passenger triumphs, thus treating an allied party will not bring permanent benefits. It is no comfort to know that other allied countries in the United States, such as Israel, Japan and the members of the European Union have gone worse, since Argentina is much more vulnerable. Also, although Trump is unlikely to have deairacy on the purpose of Milei when he traveled to Mar-A-Lago hoping to add another photo to his collection, for many the episode meant that the North American is not willing to help his Argentine fan.
When the rapid expansion of international trade distributed enormous benefits to the countries that participated, Argentina was isolated because entrepreneurs, accustomed to “capitalism of friends”, did not want to compete, now, when it is in the process of consolidating a consensus in favor of an opening, the United States is promoting protectionism. Although the Europeans, the Chinese and others are solved to keep the commercial barriers low, it would surprise that many did, which raises capital problems to those countries, Argentina is one, who were looking for a place in a world that, according to the most alarmed by the tariff war unleashed by Trump, no longer exists.
