“I Wanna Make a Song Like David Byrne,” Sing Nell Smith in “Anxious”, the title track of this album. The piece doesn’t sound like David Byrne. Rather, 1990-alternative sounds-think of the Flaming Lips, with which Nell Smith 2022, just 14 years old, recorded the Nick-Cave Coveralbum Where the Viaduct Looms-on the modern slacker pop of Soccer Mommy or Beabadoobee. Afterwards, however, the whole thing is pulled again by a gentle psychedelic bath.
The song thus sets the tone for an album that, in its non -binding, comes like a bundle of notes from Smith’s life. There is the little Lo-Fi piece “Bubba”, an appreciation to a deceased friend. The different layers of the music seem to lie on top of each other like warm and cold water in a lake. The “Boy in A Bubble” runs over a small melody from the plastic keyboard – meanwhile meant by friend and mentor Wayne Coyne. And there is the indulgent “split in the sky”, in which Smith tells a kind of modern baroque pop of how it paints the stars.
Nell Smith died in a car accident last autumn at the age of 17. Before that, she had signed a record contract with Simon Raymondes Bella Union. It may be that the unfinished, the direct, that these songs blow around, simply stirs that she was only able to perceive a session in their Brighton studios. The idea is that this music should sound exactly the same.
