Janis Joplin: A plate for a goodbye

The star Janis Joplins opened at the Montery Pop Festival in 1967. The decisive factor for this was their dynamic stage act and their fascinating voice. At that time she was still a lead singer of the group Big Brother and the Holding Company.
They came together for two years, then they were confronted with a problem that appeared for almost every group at some point: there were differences in their musical ideas. Janis suffered a lot from this situation, later she commented on as follows: “Personally, I got on my own with the boys, but since I take my musical ideas very seriously, I had to separate myself from the group. We worked six evenings a week at the time. Every time we played the same numbers, which made everything to routine and no more variety or variations were possible”.
Janis Joplin was born in Port Arthur, Texas, a small town with only about 60,000 inhabitants. She looked very consciously loneliness, as there were hardly any people in her immediate surroundings with whom she could talk about the things she was interested in. But inside she defended herself that she rebelled against everything she calculated and rusted. And that was not a little.
When she was 17, she went to San Francisco because she had now noticed that she would not find in her birthplace what she was looking for. She bought plates from Bessie Smith and Otta and imitated them in bars and folk clubs. She accompanied herself on the guitar. A good acquaintance finally brought her into contact with Big Brother.
“I just exploded!”
She joined the group as a vocalist and started her big career without guessing it at the time. Apart from the fact that she delighted the audience, something else happened at the time: for the first time she became fully aware of her own skills and discovered the possibilities of taking advantage of it.
“I no longer know exactly what happened to me at the time,” she said later, “I just exploded! I had never sung. Before that I was always on stage and sang in the style of Odetta. But when you play with a rock group, you are torn and torn up by the mandatory rhythm. I was spurred more at the same time than usual”.
