In the protest action against the arrival of an asylum seekers’ center (AZC) in Uden, not five but six people were arrested on Wednesday evening. The sixth arrested suspect is a 19-year-old man from Stramproy in Limburg. The police reported this on Thursday evening. Earlier it was announced that three men from Uden and two suspects from Bergeijk and Veghel had been arrested.
According to the police, about two hundred protesters were present on Lieve Vrouwenplein on Wednesday evening during an information evening about the arrival of 750 refugees in the municipality of Maashorst. Agents guided the attendees and handed out leaflets containing the rules that the demonstrators had to adhere to.
Around eight o’clock the atmosphere on the square changed and a large group of people walked towards the Kruisheren Chapel where the info evening was held. Under that group, according to the police, people from outside Uden were also from Oss and Roosendaal. They were stopped by agents. Then it got out of hand. Campaigners started throwing stones, bottles, cans and heavy fireworks. There was also spraying with pepper spray towards agents.
When the atmosphere became grim, the mayor decided to put an end to the demonstration for safety. The mobile unit (me) intervened and pushed the crowd apart, and also blows were distributed. The peace returned.
Five of the six suspects were released again. Only those who squirted with pepper spray is still stuck.
