After a short commitment to FC Bayern, Yann Sommer returns to his old place of work for the first time. At the time, he commented in advance.
When Yann Sommer competes with Inter Milan for the Champions League quarter-finals in the Allianz Arena on Tuesday evening, it is a reunion with familiar faces. The Swiss national goalkeeper was active at FC Bayern for six months in early 2023. At the press conference before the game, Sommer emphasized that he looks back “with very good feelings” in Munich.
He described the months at the record champions as “short”, “intensive”, and despite some difficulties as “successful with the championship title”. The 35-year-old also showed that the circumstances were not optimal: “Even if it didn’t go as we imagined.”
During his engagement there were many changes in the club, Sommer recalled: “It was restless, just an intensive time.” In the end, the title win of the season gave a conciliatory note, although it “was not easy for everyone”. However, he does not see an open bill with the association.
Sommer emphasized that he always felt comfortable in Munich. A lot has happened on the goalkeeper position at FC Bayern since his farewell. In the absence of the further injured Manuel Neuer, Jonas Urbig is currently between the posts – a name that has left an impression at summer.
The 21-year-old Urbig, came from the 1st FC Köln in the summer, convinced the former Bayern goalkeeper in the last appearances: “First of all, I have a big opinion of him. I have admittedly not seen him play so often, but the last games I saw from him impressed me.”
Sommer particularly emphasized the football skills and the appearance of the young keeper: “He has a great charisma for his age. He is very good with his foot. So, I liked it very much.”
Despite its own experience with the pressure in the Bayern goal, summer does not see a great need for advice for his young colleague: “I don’t think he needs big tips from me. I think Bayern Munich is a world club, he will do this in the situation behind Manuel Neuer, and if the moment-I don’t know the planning of FC Bayern-I wish him all the best.” The direct meeting with Urbig in the Champions League duel sees summer with anticipation: “I am happy to play against him” (from 9 p.m. in the live ticker at T-Online).
