After the Russian invasion in Ukraine in 2022, Heesen Yachts quickly wanted to get rid of owner Vagit Alekperov. The Russian was a former Soviet sub-star and founder of oil company Lukoil. Because of his tires with Putin and the threat of EU sanctions, the company threatened to get back in heavy weather.

A first attempt to place his shares in a Dutch foundation failed, but later the transfer was still successful. Since then, Heesen has been completely in Dutch hands again. According to the company, the Russian may have led to bankruptcy and the loss of a thousand jobs.
