It is a brave step: Norwegian Emilie Ågheim Kalkenberg will no longer be part of the national team in the future – at her own request.

Seven years ago, the Norwegian biathlete Emilie Ågheim Kalkenberg made her debut in the World Cup. Now she has made a drastic decision: she doesn’t want to be part of the national team anymore. The 27-year-old announced this on Instagram.

She wrote to a photo of herself: “After many great years in the national team, I would now like to go my own way! I have learned a lot, good and bad, and I am now looking forward to using these experiences to put together a program that I really believe in.”

She explained: “It will be an incredibly exciting and demanding project that I am very looking forward to and I am very motivated to start with it before the Olympic season. I don’t feel that much as a biathlete, and I would like to try my own conditions and without compromise to see how far I can get next season.”

The Winter Olympics will take place in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo at the beginning of next year. Kalkenberg came up with World Cup missions in the past season, but these were limited. The Norwegian reached her best placement at the sprint in Annecy. There she took 26th place.

Kalkenberg gets support from Norwegian greats of the sport. So the two -time Olympic champion Tiril Eckhoff wrote under the post: “Go Girl.” The Finnish athlete Anna-Karin Heijdenberg also expressed her joy with Kalkenberg. Just like Karoline Knotten.
