It takes some getting used to for the six -month -old hippo Fenna. This morning she was allowed to go to the country residence of Wildlands in Emmen for the first time.
The hippo gay stayed with her mother in the stable for the past six months, where she learned to swim and became acquainted with the other hippos in the herd.
Today, Fenna steps curiously and carefully behind her mother into the ‘hippopotamal pool’. There she sees sand for the first time.
After the young hippo has been able to explore the new area, she makes the first steps towards the water. Visitors to the zoo can see through the glass viewing wall that goes under water, how the animal takes a dip in the water.
For years, only female hippos were walking around in the stay of the Emmen Zoo. A few years ago the herd was expanded with the arrival of an 11-year-old male, he came from an animal park in Belgium.
Fenna is the first born Nile horse in Wildlands in 17 years.
