Michael Schumacher is one of the best racing drivers of all time. One of his cars now comes under the hammer – and could achieve a record price.
When the Principality of Monaco becomes a stage for the next Formula 1 race in early May, a very special spectacle takes place off the track: one of the legendary Ferrari racing car comes under the hammer-one with a prominent past.
As part of the Monaco Grand Prix 2025, the Sotheby’s auction house will auctioned a copy of the Ferrari F2001 with the chassis number 211. With exactly this vehicle, Michael Schumacher won the Grand Prix of Hungary in 2001 and thus secured the SCUDERIA at an early stage. Schumacher was also able to win the prestigious Monaco race in 2001-this makes the car the only Ferrari with which Schumacher triumphed both in the principality and in the World Cup.
The vehicle in New York already came to the auction in 2017. At that time, the estimate was around four million US dollars. But interest exceeded all expectations: $ 7.504 million brought in-at the time the second highest amount that was ever paid for a Formula 1 vehicle. In the meantime, the F2001 is in fifth place in the most expensive F1 cars. There were only three Mercedes and another Ferrari from Schumacher from 2003.
It remains open whether the car is adding again on the second attempt. Sotheby’s did not give a new estimation price. The only thing that is certain is that the technical condition should also motivate potential buyers. Ferrari had recently donated two comprehensive inspections to the car – a 2024 and a 2025. In contrast to the last auction 2017, the racing car is currently traveling.
The auction will take place on May 24th-exactly in the place where Schumacher once celebrated its Monaco victory with the F2001. Timing is no coincidence. Sotheby’s and the previous owner rely on the auction as part of the Formula 1 race, where the more sophisticated social class is rising year after year, numerous wealthy interested parties are again. Part of the proceeds should benefit the Schumacher Foundation “Keep Fighting”.
If the Ferrari stays in Europe after the sale, additional costs will be paid to the buyer. Currently, the vehicle has only been brought to Monaco with a preliminary import permit. If the car is not carried out promptly, import duties are also due in addition to the auction fee and VAT.
