It is pure coincidence, and certainly not a April-April joke. But from today you will get a warning on the bus, if you drive into the Zero emission zone with an outdated stink order bus. The warning period runs until 1 September, the provisional planning is. After that, a violation will hurt financially, namely 120 euros at a time.

The cameras that are in all kinds of places at the start of the emission -free zone in the center area, register license plates. And if they fall under the category that is no longer allowed, then a warning letter automatically plunges in the letterbox.

In principle, Assen has introduced the zero emission zone in the center area on 1 January, despite broad resistance from the middle class and entrepreneurial Assen. The Capital in Drenthe is therefore one of the fifteen cities in the country that do that. After all the protests, the municipality promised ‘a soft landing’ of the measure.

According to alderman Bert Jan ten Oever (Stadspartij Plop), that means that the first test months are closely monitored, and that an evaluation follows around the summer.

If nothing is empty, Assen will just distribute fines on 1 September. But if there are things that still require extra attention, adjustment of the implementing schedule is possible.

At the start at the beginning of this year it was already wrong. There was strong criticism of the first signs. They didn’t virtues, and were immediately taped with black tape. It seemed as if the emission -free zone applied to no less than all delivered vehicles. That was a mistake. Or rather, incomplete. On the signs missed essential information.

Yesterday all black tape was removed, and the plates are provided with a QR code to be scanned. For example, all drivers of delivery vans can check license plate, and see if their vehicle falls under the ‘Stinkwagen’ category or whether they can deliver their freight carefree. Introduction of the emission -free zone will be done in phases in the coming years. The oldest diesel vehicles were the first to be banned. Trucks follow later.
