The VfL Wolfsburg footballers secured the perfect start to the Champions League at the last second.

After the 4-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain at the start, a penalty from Janina Minge gave coach Stephan Lerch’s team a deserved 2-1 (0-0) at Valerenga Oslo on Wednesday evening.

After a handball from Naina Maria Inauen, Minge converted safely into the left corner in the 90th +8. After a tough first half, attacker Lineth Beerensteyn had put VfL in the lead (57th). Shortly afterwards, Sara Hörte equalized for the underdogs after a corner (60th).

In advance, coach Lerch had spoken of a “great opportunity” to “score six points” against the Norwegian runner-up. That would be great considering the timing.

With two wins, Wolfsburg got off to an ideal start in the newly introduced league phase, but still has tricky tasks ahead of them with Olympique Lyon, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Chelsea FC.

The first four teams in the league table qualify directly for the quarter-finals and play the second leg at home. The clubs in places five to twelve will play the remaining quarter-finalists, and the teams in places 13 to 18 will be eliminated directly.
