59 dead and 150 injured after stampede at Halloween parties in Seoul

At least 59 people have died and 150 have turned out injuries as a result of an apparent stampede in the Itaewon neighborhood, in the center of seoul, the capital of South Korea, which each year brings together thousands of people during the celebration of Halloween.

Videos shared on social media show emergency teams practicing resuscitation maneuvers over dozens of people in the middle of the street in Itaewon. The Central Office for Disasters and Security of the South Korean Ministry of the Interior affirms that there are more than 100 people who have required emergency medical assistance, in part due to cardiorespiratory arrest.

Also, the South Korean newspaper ‘The Hankyoreh‘ points out that police and fire officials have moved “Dozens” of bodies that could be deceased, although for now only the death of two people is known. Most of the victims would be women in their 20sas reported by the South Korean agency Yonhap News.

South Korean President, Yoon Suk-yeolhas ordered an emergency operation to provide first aid to those affected.

The apparent stampede has taken place around 11:30 p.m. local time (14:30 GMT) in the vicinity of the Hamilton Hotel, in front of the Itaewon subway station. At least 142 emergency vehicles, between ambulances and fire trucks, have been sent to the scene.

100,000 people concentrated

Every year, the Itaewon neighborhood, adjacent to a US military base, becomes the busiest point to celebrate Halloween in Seoul. The Police had previously reported that they expected a large concentration of some 100,000 people at the Halloween party where the tragedy occurred.
