500,000 long-term sick people and only 20 applied for a 1,800 euro premium to return to work: what is going wrong with the policy?

46 of the more than 500,000 long-term sick people in our country received a sanction and even fewer people applied for a premium of 1,800 euros from the Back to Work fund, into which employers have already paid millions. Minister of Social Affairs Frank Vandenbroucke (Vooruit) announced these measures three years ago to reduce the growing number of long-term ill people in our country, but they have little impact. “We all meant well,” says labor economics professor Stijn Baert. “But not strong enough.” How do we get those people back to work?
