At least 49 inmates have been killed in an attempted escape from a prison in the city of Tulua in southwestern Colombia. That reports Al Jazeera Tuesday.

The agency that manages the country’s prisons says the people were killed during an escape attempt. The head of the prison administrator calls the incident “tragic and disastrous.”

Thirty people were also said to have been injured in the riots. Death toll could rise, sources report to news agency AFP† There have been no reports of casualties among prison guards or civilians.

There are said to have been 1,267 inmates within the walls during the incident. Colombian President Iván Duque has announced an investigation.
