4 in 10 Flemish people are willing to buy an electric car (and just as many are not aware of it) | Domestic

PoliticsThe Major Poll by HLN, VTM Nieuws, RTL and Le Soir shows that 41 percent of Flemish people are already prepared to purchase an electric car in the future. But: there are just as many who shouldn’t not know about it. Who are they voting for?

Voters from CD&V and N-VA are most in favor of electric driving. VB and PVDA voters are the most on the brakes. For those who are not thinking about buying such a copy, the expensive price tag is the main reason. In concrete terms, this concerns the excessively high purchase price of the car (76 percent), but also the charging rate for refueling with electricity (50 percent).

The fact that the battery under the hood also causes heavy environmental pollution is a smaller stumbling block (37%). Flemish people are more likely to worry about ‘charging stress’ in all its facets: just think of the lack of charging stations along the road (38 percent) or the short distance that the vehicle can travel per refueling (27 percent). But also: the absence of charging stations near their own home (22 percent). What also plays a role in the fear of cold feet is the fact that the electric battery spontaneously discharges when the car is stationary at home during these cold winter months (21 percent).

Adjust lifestyle

An important reason to drive electric is of course to emit less fossil fuels and thus combat global warming. Our survey shows that Flemish people are well aware of this matter: 56 percent say they are already experiencing the consequences of climate change. More than two-thirds (67 percent) think that the influence will be tangible on their lives in the future. CD&V and Green voters are the most likely to say that they are already feeling the consequences, while VB voters are the least likely to say.

Opinions differ on how exactly climate change should be combated. 40 percent of Flemish people say that we should adapt our own lifestyle, while 30 percent put their eggs in the basket of science and innovation. One in five Flemish people shrugs their shoulders and answers that there is nothing more that can be done. Finally, three percent of all respondents believe that climate change does not exist: most of them belong to the VB and the Walloon PTB.

About the Great Poll

The Major Poll of ‘Het Laatste Nieuws’, ‘VTM NIEUWS’, RTL and ‘Le Soir’ was conducted online by Ipsos between 4 and 11 December among 2,600 Belgians aged 18 and older. It concerns 1,000 Flemish, 1,000 Walloons and 600 Brussels residents. The maximum margin of error is 3.1 percent in Flanders, 3.1 percent in Wallonia and 4 percent in Brussels.

THE BIG PILL. Open Vld becomes the smallest party in Flanders, a quarter chooses Vlaams Belang

No more seats for Somers, De Block, De Gucht and many others: this means dramatic results in the Major Poll for Open Vld (+)
