“THIS SITUATION THAT HAS BECOME ORDINARY IS NEVER ACCEPTABLE”
Health workers working at Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty Pediatric Emergency Service were exposed to verbal attacks and death threats 4 times last night. The assistant doctors who were attacked and the Head of the Department of Child Health and Diseases Prof. Dr. Haluk Çokuğraş made a statement in front of the hospital. Demanding an end to the violence, Çokuğraş said, “Our assistant doctors who were on duty in Cerrahpaşa Pediatric Emergency Service on 07.12.2021 were subjected to verbal attacks, heavy swearing and death threats 4 times in one night. This is neither the first time, I am afraid, nor the last. “A similar situation was encountered by the assistants of the Istanbul Medical Faculty Pediatrics Clinic just a month ago. This situation that our young friends who have been working candidly under severe pandemic conditions for 2 years, and which unfortunately has now become commonplace for all healthcare professionals, is never acceptable.”

“We strongly condemn these attacks on physicians and all healthcare workers,” said Haluk Çokuğraş, “We are aware that condemnation is no longer sufficient. For things to change, how many more physicians must be exposed to violence and how many healthcare workers must lose their lives. Dozens of physicians who resigned are reported in the press every day. What kind of performance can be expected from young doctors who are met with such negativity at the very beginning of their profession. I’m afraid that after a while you will not find a doctor to take care of you when you are sick. Can a doctor who was exposed to heavy swearing 5 minutes ago and threatened with death be expected to continue to look after the patient as if nothing had happened? “What should we do, should we take our own security measures to defend ourselves. Is there an attack on a bank officer for waiting in line at the bank? Are bakers beaten for waiting in a line for bread? Are employees being attacked because their work is slow in government offices? Intensive patient admissions?” How can it be accepted that young doctor friends, who work hard under the law and are the best-bred children in this country, are exposed to such attacks? Physicians and other health workers formed in the community; I see that the perception that they are people who can be insulted, beaten and even killed has reached an extremely dangerous level, and I invite the authorities once again to duty. Those who carry out these attacks should be punished in the most severe way; They should be prevented from benefiting from free health services and they should be taken to psychiatric treatment,” he said.
“WE CANNOT RESERVE SO MUCH INSURANCE”
Nur Çebi, the assistant doctor, stated that they could not stand violence anymore and said, “We take it according to the severity of a patient’s condition. Other than that, we do not prioritize the diseases. Some of our patients, who did not want to wait while waiting, went directly to our polyclinic and insulted us when there was a patient inside. They walked on us. We were sick all night until the morning. “We continued to look. Some of our assistants took a break to collect themselves for about 5 minutes. We continued to work on them, we did not expect a thank you, but we can’t stand such insults anymore,” he said.
