After the 3-1 defeat at Waldhof Mannheim, FC Viktoria Köln came back with a home win against SV Wehen Wiesbaden.

On Saturday, the Domstadters were a bit lucky 1-0 (0-0) against the Hessians and thus collected the first three points of the new season in the 3rd league.

Viktoria is fully in the game

The Viktoria started with captain Marcel Risse, who celebrated his comeback, and new signing Robin Meißner up front. The latter was directly involved in the first dangerous goalscoring scenes of the game. Kevin Lankford couldn’t put his cross in the goal in the 3rd minute. Benedict Hollerbach became dangerous for Wiesbaden just two minutes later and forced Ben Voll to make a strong save in goal for Cologne (5th). The Viktoria custodian was increasingly in focus as he had to parry a header from John Iredale (16′), a free-kick from Brooklyn Ezeh (18′) and another header from Hollerbach (23′). The Hessians determined the game in this phase and pushed for the opening goal against overwhelmed Cologne, who could hardly get out of their own half. Voll was beaten for the first time in the 28th minute, but Lars Dietz cleared for him on the goal line.

Only in the 32nd minute did Viktoria give a sign of life in front of the opposing goal. However, a long-range shot by Risse went well over the goal. Until the break, it was again mainly the guests who scored more chances, but missed the lead they deserved. Shortly before the half-time whistle, the Cologne team was reduced to ten players because Christoph Greger saw the yellow-red card (45th).

Mrowca flies, Koronkiewicz scores

Viktoria coach Olaf Janßen reacted to his team’s poor performance and being outnumbered with a double substitution in the second half. Jamil Siebert and Hamza Saghiri came on for Risse and David Philipp. The hosts scored their first chance after just 40 seconds when Johannes Wurtz narrowly missed the goal with a direct acceptance (46′). Cologne were now better in the game, which made the game more balanced, but also less spectacular.

From the 70th minute, the Wiesbaden team were down to ten. Sebastian Mrowca also saw the yellow-red card. Somewhat surprisingly, Viktoria took the lead in the 77th minute. Patrick Koronkiewicz scored from close range on a pass from Patrick Sontheimer to make it 1-0 for the home side. The guests now pushed for the equalizer, but found it harder against Cologne, who were now defending with courage, than in the first half. A long-range shot by Robin Heusser was no problem for the strong Voll (84′). Goalscorer Koronkiewicz had the decision in the third minute of added time, but failed in a one-on-one by Wehen goalkeeper Florian Stritzel.
