3rd league: VfL Osnabrück outclasses Waldhof Mannheim

As of: 10/01/2022 6:55 p.m

VfL Osnabrück celebrated an important home win in the third division. There was a 5-0 (3-0) win against Waldhof Mannheim on Saturday at the Bremen Bridge.

After the second home win in a row, Tobias Schweinsteiger’s team can carefully look back up the table. On the Mannheim side, the afternoon was particularly bitter for coach Christian Neidhart: he suffered a setback in his home town on his 54th birthday.

VfL almost used the weaknesses in the Waldhof defense early on. Ba-Muaka Simakala put the ball over the goal from six yards out (2′).

Then a lack of concentration crept into the Osnabrück game. Mannheim had some good approaches and degrees. However, there was no 100% chance.

Double strike for a 2-0 lead

Osnabrück caught up after half an hour and took a 2-0 lead within less than three minutes: Florian Kleinhansl first scored with a well-placed low shot from 20 meters (35 ‘). A little later, VfL combined well through the Waldhof defense, Felix Higl headed to the post, Julian Riedel steered the ball from one meter into his own goal (38th).

And it was even more bitter for the guests and Riedel: He blocked a Simakala free kick in the penalty area with his upper arm. Referee Max Burda whistled for a hand penalty and showed Riedel a yellow-red card. Simakala converted the penalty safely and made the decision with the half-time whistle.

Rain delays

Then came the heavy rain: It poured like cats and dogs, and the start of the second half was delayed by several minutes. It didn’t matter to VfL. He made it 4-0 through Higl (51st). Lower Saxony continued to storm and followed up again: veteran Marc Heider scored the final point in the 84th minute.
