3D tribute to walrus Freya during Sail Den Helder: “3D? For us it’s abracadabra”

A special tribute to walrus Freya during Sail Den Helder and the Navy Days. Commissioned by Citymarketing Den Helder, the American 3D artist Naomi Haverland is making a street painting of the walrus in the walking route to the festival site. The walrus was world news when the animal swam around and rested in the naval port for some time in 2021. “In Norway they are working on a statue of Freya. We already have her.”

People have been busy drawing and painting on the Keizersbrug on the edge of the center for days. Passers-by constantly pause to reflect on Naomi Haverland’s work. “I had never heard of Den Helder. When I started searching the internet, Freya came up first. I thought it would be fun to paint a walrus as well.”

Icon

What else will be added, Christiaan Verhoef of Citymarketing does not yet want to reveal. “Freya has simply become an icon. I can’t reveal everything yet, but there is something else that fits perfectly with Sail Den Helder. We try to make a beautiful 3D drawing every year, because it has also become iconic for the city .”

Watch the video to see how the 3D painting is progressing.

Many residents of Den Helder are looking forward to the result of the 3D drawing. “All the drawings that have been made in the past were very beautiful, but this one seems even more beautiful,” says Coen Makelaar. His wife Gerrie is especially amazed at how such a 3D drawing is made. “How does she know it’s 3D? She puts down a piece of string and then she knows she has to draw like that. For her it’s 3D, but for us it’s Abracadabra.”

Starting tomorrow, the 3D drawing can be admired on the Keizersbrug in Den Helder.

Sail Den Helder is next week from June 29 to July 2 and NH is there daily to report. The ‘Sail In’ on Thursday 29 June can be followed via a live stream on the website and on Friday 30 June we will make a live TV broadcast around the Crew Parade from 4:15 pm. On Saturday and Sunday, Sail is combined with the Marine Days.
