2nd league: Schalke wins spectacle at SV Darmstadt – draw at Werder Bremen vs 1. FC Nürnberg

5 second division duels on Sunday

FC Schalke 04 continues to storm towards the Bundesliga under interim coach Mike Büskens. The leaders won 5-2 (3-2) at surprise pursuers SV Darmstadt 98 on Sunday and are now two points ahead of Werder Bremen. In front of 14,500 spectators in the sold-out stadium at Böllenfalltor, Marius Bülter shone with a hat-trick in the 43rd, 48th and 62nd minute. Simon Terrode scored twice (14th and 29th). The 34-year-old thus extended his lead in the top scorer list in the 2nd Bundesliga to 24 goals.

The 54-year-old Schalke ex-professional Büskens celebrated his fifth win in five games as the successor to Dimitrios Grammozis. After this lesson, the Darmstadt team are now two points behind the relegation place with FC St. Pauli and are still in the fight for promotion despite the setback.

In the 850th second division game in their club history, the “Lilien” started well with a goal from Phillip Tietz (14th) and also equalized in the meantime with the striker (34th). With Morten Behrens in goal, who stood in for the injured regular keeper Marcel Schuhen, it hit again and again in a wild game with many interruptions. Schalke also managed to take revenge for the 2:4 in the first leg.

Werder Bremen missed home win against 1. FC Nürnberg

Werder Bremen left important counters in the fight for promotion. On Easter Sunday, coach Ole Werner’s team drew 1-1 (0-1) in the top game against direct rivals 1. FC Nürnberg. Nuremberg’s Nikola Dovedan made it 1-0 with a penalty (24th minute). Substitute Mitchell Weiser provided the deserved equalizer (65th). The green-whites didn’t take advantage of many great opportunities. A foul by Milos Veljkovic on Lino Tempelmann in the penalty area brought the Hanseatic League an annoying penalty goal.

Werder then pressed for the equalizer. Nürnberg, however, defended passionately with their five-man chain and made life difficult for the hosts. Bremen came urgently from half-time and Marvin Ducksch failed with a flick at Nuremberg keeper Christian Mathenia (50th). After a nice pass, Weiser pushed the ball into the goal to equalize. A supposed winning goal by Nuremberg through substitute Pascal Köpke was disallowed for offside (69′).

Erzgebirge Aue keeps a small chance of staying up

After four defeats in a row, FC Erzgebirge Aue has celebrated a win again and at least increased its small chance of staying in the 2nd division. Thanks to a brace from offensive man Ben Zolinski (54th and 79th minute), the Saxons won 2-0 (0-0) at 1. FC Heidenheim and reduced the gap to relegation rank 16 to seven points. With four games to go, Heidenheim is eight points behind third and thus has little chance of promotion.

SC Paderborn promotes FC Ingolstadt towards the 3rd division

SC Paderborn pushed FC Ingolstadt towards the 3rd division. The East Westphalians won 1-0 (0-0) in the relegation-threatened Schanzer and remain in eighth place in the table. A converted penalty kick by Florent Muslija (70th) led to the final score. Ingolstadt has four missing games ten points behind the relegation place.

Hansa Rostock against Jahn Regensburg without a winner

Newly promoted FC Hansa Rostock missed a preliminary decision in the fight to remain in the second division. The Mecklenburg team couldn’t get past a 1-1 (1-0) draw against Jahn Regensburg and four games before the end of the season they are still nine points ahead of relegation rank 16, which is currently held by Dynamo Dresden. John Verhoek (44th) scored the goal in front of 24,000 spectators in Rostock’s Ostseestadion for coach Jens Härtel’s team, who ended the game in a decimated manner after Danylo Sikan received a red card in injury time after an assault. Nicklas Shipnoski (59th) scored for the guests.
