2nd League: Schalke 04 loses at KSC – Hertha gives up the win

Kiel climbs to third place

The debut of the new coach Karel Geraerts at FC Schalke 04 was unsuccessful. The Royal Blues deservedly lost 0-3 (0-2) at Karlsruher SC on Sunday and are still deep in the bottom of the table in the 2nd Bundesliga. Lars Stindl (22nd) and Igor Matanovic (37th) scored in front of 33,000 spectators for KSC, who ended their winless streak and moved away from the relegation zone. Schalke’s defender Henning Matriciani also scored an own goal (75′). The Gelsenkirchen team suffered their fourth defeat in a row and are now third from bottom, five points behind non-relegation place 15.

Geraerts had extensively restructured Schalke’s starting eleven and, among other things, ordered veteran Ralf Fährmann back into goal. But Karlsruhe got off to a clearly better start. Stindl rewarded them with the technically impressive opening goal. After the guests remained completely harmless offensively for half an hour, Bryan Lasme missed a huge chance to equalize (35th). Shortly later, center forward Matanovic, who had prepared the 1-0, increased the score to 2-0 with a low shot. Even after the break, the KSC remained the more dangerous team, Fabian Schleusener failed several times to S04 keeper Fährmann. Just as Schalke seemed to be recovering, Matriciani slid a cross from Schleusener into his own goal.

Hertha gives up victory in Nuremberg and loses

A courageous 1. FC Nürnberg won the traditional duel against Hertha BSC and stopped the Berliners’ away streak. The “Club” deservedly won 2-1 (0-1) on Sunday and moved past the capital city team in the table. They had previously been successful abroad twice in a row and were now slowed in their race to catch up in the German lower house.

After falling behind by Smail Prevljak (15th), Nuremberg turned the game around with goals from Jens Castrop (57th), an own goal from Berlin captain Toni Leistner (72nd) and Daichi Hayashi (84th). FCN youngster Can Uzun missed a penalty (39th). In a wild final phase, Berlin’s Marc Oliver Kempf (67th) and Nuremberg’s Ivan Marquez (74th) were each sent off due to emergency braking.

In front of 37,320 spectators, Nuremberg were the much more active team – but they couldn’t find a gap in the visitors’ defense for a long time. Hertha took advantage of their first chance after a quick attack: Prevljak finished with his backheel from close range. After an hour, things got eventful: First, the eye-catching Castrop managed to score a well-deserved equalizer. Shortly afterwards, Kempf saw red according to video evidence. Just moments later, Hertha’s Leistner slotted a cross from Benjamin Goller into his own goal. Then Marquez was sent off. Finally, substitute Hayashi made everything clear with a goal.

Holstein Kiel reverses deficit in Rostock: jumps to 3rd place

With the 3:1 (1:1) at Hansa Rostock, Holstein Kiel managed to jump to third place. Even the early deficit caused by Christian Kinsombi’s goal (18th) didn’t upset the guests. Fiete Arp (33rd), Nicolai Remberg (56th) and Timo Becker (58th) brought the hard-fought success. FC St. Pauli is still at the top of the table after a 2-2 (0-1) draw at SC Paderborn on Saturday. However, the second Hamburger SV was able to catch up on points with a 2-0 (2-0) win over SpVgg Greuther Fürth.
