2nd league: Lightning start from Darmstadt 98 caught HSV by surprise

Status: 08/19/2022 8:38 p.m

Thanks to a double strike in the first few minutes, Darmstadt 98 celebrated a win at Hamburger SV. In addition to three goals, there were four dismissals.

It was already a showdown on the fifth day of play when two of the most promising contenders for promotion to the Bundesliga met in Hamburg. With nine points each, HSV and Darmstadt were among the most successful teams at the start of the season.

The winner would send a clear signal to the competition. And the guests apparently took that on immediately for the first few minutes.

Kempe served at Darmstadt’s dream start

Because in the early stages, Darmstadt surprised Hamburg and quickly led 2-0. First Patric Pfeiffer headed in after a corner by Tobias Kempe (4′), then Kempe served his goal-getter Phillip Tietz, who scored his third goal of the season after his brace against Rostock (4-0) last weekend (7′). .

Only then did HSV find their way, took control – also out of necessity because of the score – and created chances. Robert Glatzel failed at the most promising opportunity from close range at the strongly reacting 98 goalkeeper Marcel Schuhen (19th).

No home win against Darmstadt since 1981

But Darmstadt managed to get free again and again and had chances through Tietz (22nd) and Braydon Manu (33rd) – both times Hamburg’s keeper Daniel Heuer had to save Fernandes. The guests, pushed out of the promotion race last year in the final sprint by HSV, who missed the Bundesliga in the relegation, not only managed their lead, but also played for the third goal.

That didn’t work out for the time being, but already at half-time it was becoming clear that HSV would have to wait for a win against Darmstadt almost 41 years after the 6-1 win at home. Since then there have been six duels in Hamburg, four of them won 98, two ended in a draw.

Dompé comes as a beacon of hope

So that there is at least not the fifth defeat in the seven games without a win, coach Tim Walter brought in new signing Jean-Luc Dompé, who had just joined HSV from Zulte Waregem the day before. And with his first actions, the Frenchman caused a change of mood, at least in the stands.

But only the Darmstadt team remained dangerous. Once again Heuer Fernandes had to show all his skills after Tietz, who could hardly be stopped in the air, headed again (49′). Then Manu had the next good chance a little later, but he missed the goal (54th).

15 record-breaking minutes – which have little to do with football

Then the entertaining game turned into a card game. First Klaus Gjasula was sent off after repeated foul play with yellow-red (59th). Then Hamburg’s Opoku lost his nerve and went after Darmstadt captain Fabian Holland – red card (64th). Aaron Opoku had come on as a substitute just eight minutes earlier and had previously been shown a yellow card.

A little later, HSV had bad luck. Glatzel was fouled in the opponent’s penalty area, but the game was mistakenly interrupted beforehand because of an alleged offside position (68th). Trainer Walter complained vehemently and saw yellow. Overall, referee Robert Schröder showed nine yellow cards and one red card in the 15 minutes between the 54th and 69th minute.

Königsdörfer first with goal, then with red

The game calmed down again afterwards, but picked up speed again towards the end. Glatzel missed a great chance to score the goal (79th). Then Magnus Warming missed the 3-0 by centimeters (86th), in return HSV came back into the game. After a corner, Glatzel headed in the direction of his strike partner Ransford Königsdörffer, who scored the goal from close range (87th).

But then the card show from Hamburg had another punchline: Königsdörffer saw the red card for looking up (89th), his sports director Jonas Boldt also because of his vehement complaint. The number three and four of the game was sent off, and HSV was outnumbered in the final minutes.
