FC St. Pauli didn’t let 1. FC Nürnberg stop them in the 2nd Bundesliga. Thanks to a double strike from Johannes Eggestein (49th/56th minute) after the break, Hamburg celebrated their fourth win in a row with a 5-1 (1-1) win against the Franconians on Saturday evening. In stoppage time, substitutes Etienne Amenyido (90+3) and Connor Metcalfe (90+5) made the victory even clearer. Coach Fabian Hürzeler’s undefeated team successfully defended their lead in the table after the ninth matchday.

“We controlled Nuremberg after the break, even if there were two or three situations in which we were too unfocused. The last five minutes felt a bit like a rush. “It felt just as good that we had an answer ready to almost everything the opponent did,” said FCSP member Hauke Wahl.
Meanwhile, goalscorer Amenyido confirmed Hamburg’s ambitions: “We are good at the back and we have so much quality up front that anyone can score goals. But we have to stick with it, it’s just one victory among many.”
In the first half, Elias Saad (4th) gave the hosts an early lead in front of 29,546 spectators in the sold-out Millerntorstadion. After a miss by St. Pauli’s goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj, Kanji Okunuki (24′) managed to equalize. The Nuremberg team suffered their first defeat after three games and are currently ninth.

After the game, FCSP striker Eggestein spoke of an “improvement, both for us as a team and for me personally. (…) At first I was surprised by the ‘Football God’ chants, but also happy. Today it was probably deserved that everyone was called that.” Meanwhile, offensive partner Jackson Irvine explained: “A lot of things fit together at the moment. I am incredibly proud of this team, of each and every one of them.”
Manolis Saliakas, who has been named to the Greek squad for the upcoming European Championship qualifying games, said: “I am very happy, this is the highlight here at the club. I think my commitment and results here at FC St. Pauli have earned me the nomination for the national team. (…) As a team, I particularly like the family relationship and the teamwork; those are exactly the two things that our coach demands of us.”
