2nd league: Draw series from 1.FC Kaiserslautern holds, Magdeburg leaves the bottom of the table

KSC beats Nuremberg

In the duel between the newly promoted and former German champions, 1. FC Kaiserslautern and Eintracht Braunschweig drew 1-1 (0-0) in the 2nd Bundesliga. In continuous rain and difficult pitch conditions, the Palatinate were the superior team before the break on Sunday in front of 36,332 spectators in the Fritz-Walter-Stadion. At the other end, a goal by Anthony Ujah was disallowed for foul play (18th minute). In the 52nd minute, Lion Lauberbach gave Braunschweig the lead. But FCK answered promptly: Boris Tomiak headed in after a corner to make it 1-1 (55th).

Terrence Boyd missed the Lauterer’s chance to win after 63 minutes when he was saved by the goalkeeper Jasmin Fejzic, who reacted exceptionally well. Eight minutes later, referee Robert Schröder took back a red card against FCK professional Philipp Klement after video evidence and only showed the midfielder a yellow card. Kaiserslautern, who drew for the fifth time in a row, remains in seventh place in the table with 15 points, Braunschweig is in relegation place 16 with nine points.

1. FC Magdeburg leaves the relegation zone after beating Regensburg

Promoted 1. FC Magdeburg has left the relegation zone with their second home win. The people of Elbestadt won against SSV Jahn Regensburg deservedly 1-0 (0-0). In front of 19,008 spectators, Luca Schuler scored the winning goal in the 68th minute, which SSV keeper Dejan Stojanovic, who was otherwise so strong, favored with a capital error. With their third win of the season, FCM climbed from 18th to 13th place directly behind Regensburg.

The hosts had more control of the game from the start, while Regensburg had better chances. This is how Dominik Reimann prevented the 20-metre shot by Christian Viet (11th) and the attempt by Andreas Albers (23rd) from 16 meters from Jahn’s lead. At the other end, Stojanovic (29′) saved the FCM lead from a deflected shot by Moritz Kwarteng. The next deflected shot by Leon Bell Bell (35′) landed in the goal, but referee Deniz Aytekin had to withdraw the goal after video evidence because it was offside.

After the change, the FCM was still dominant, but struggled with the exploitation of opportunities. Bell Bell (51′) was denied by Stojanovic, Atik’s free kick (57′) from more than 20 meters went to the side netting. In what was probably the best guest phase after just over an hour, in which Prince Owusu (66th) had the lead on his foot after a counterattack, FCM suddenly struck. After a long shot from Reimann, Stojanovic misjudged the ball completely and Schuler only had to push in.

Schleusener also scores against ex-club Nuremberg: KSC celebrates again

Karlsruher SC has ended its three-game winless streak in the 2nd division. Fabian Schleusener scored against his ex-club 1. FC Nürnberg on Sunday (45th minute) and paved the way for the sovereign 3-0 (1-0) home win in the end. Philip Heise followed up (78th) and Marvin Wanitzek finished the game (82nd).

While the KSC climbs to eighth place with 14 points, the Franconians can’t keep up. They are 14th in the table due to the worse goal difference.

The hosts were the more active team in the first half in front of 19,268 spectators. Nuremberg’s goalkeeper Christian Mathenia initially prevented a deficit several times. The keeper had no chance to defend himself against Schleusener’s header, who played for the “club” between 2019 and 2021.

After the break, the guests increased. However, since KSC did not want to rest on their slender lead, a respectable duel developed. The advanced left-back Heise made the decision prematurely. The Nurembergers had a little more of the game. But then they also had to concede the third goal by Wanitzek.
