VfL Bochum scored an important win at Braunschweig and sent Eintracht into the bottom of the table in the 2nd Bundesliga. Coach Uwe Rösler’s team won 2-0 (1-0) on Sunday afternoon and remained unbeaten for the fourth time in a row.
Cajetan Lenz scored the first goal for VfL early on (7th), Francis Onyeka made everything clear deep in the second half of the game (73rd). In the final phase, Bochum keeper Timo Horn even saved a penalty from Sebastian Polter (90th + 6).
Bochum efficient, Braunschweig with a lot of bad luck
VfL rewarded its forward momentum early: Maximilian Wittek brought a corner kick sharply in front of the Braunschweig goal. There Lenz climbed up and beat keeper Ron Thorben Hoffmann near the near post a meter in front of the goal. The 19-year-old headed the ball onto the bottom edge of the crossbar, from where the ball bounced into the goal.
As a result, Braunschweig had more of the game, but was unable to create any clear scoring chances. Only Leon Bell Bell failed with a crash into the crossbar (10th).
VfL more active after the break
After the break, the Rösler team invested more in their game. First Onyeka only hit the post (50th), just under a quarter of an hour later the 18-year-old midfielder made everything perfect. Philipp Hofmann, who had just been substituted, got the ball after a bad pass from Braunschweig and put it straight through to Onyeka. He beat the keeper with a low shot from eleven meters and a half-left position.
Flick hits the crossbar
Braunschweig defended itself against the defeat, but in the end it was neither compelling nor lucky in its actions: Mehmet Aydin put the ball back from the right in the penalty area to the completely unmarked Florian Flick. He aimed for the far corner. But the ball initially hit the bottom edge of the crossbar, hitting but not behind the goal line.
In stoppage time, Philipp Strompf scored Levente Szabo, and Timo Horn scratched Polter’s penalty from his right corner.
That was all that came out of it for Heiner Backhaus’s home team in the end. Bochum moved up to 13th place in the table with the win, Braunschweig is now 16th.
