The women’s team of 1. FC Nürnberg fired coach Thomas Oostendorp three game days before the end of the season. The 27-year-old Isabel Bauer takes over the team and is supposed to lead the club women to stay in the league.
Nine defeats, one win, one draw – 1. FC Nürnberg is in a real crisis in the women’s Bundesliga. The club women are on the verge of losing their originally comfortable cushion on the relegation places, which they had built up through a strong first half of the season (15 points / 9th place). After the defeat in the basement duel with Hamburger SV at the weekend The danger of relegation is even more acute. As the FCN announced on Monday, the club pulled the ripcord: coach Thomas Oostendorp was “relieved of his duties with immediate effect”.
“Clear momentum” in the relegation battle – FCN explains Coach dismissal
“The decision is based on an intensive and long-term analysis of the team’s sporting development and perspective. We had to realize that we had not been able to consistently achieve the necessary stability and set standards,” Osman Cankaya, sporting director of women’s football, is quoted as saying on the club’s own homepage. “With a view to the last games, we therefore believe it is necessary to set a clear impulse and create transparency for everyone involved at an early stage.”
Oostendorp’s successor on an interim basis is 27-year-old Isabel Bauer. Bauer is a former player, previously managed the club’s U19 women and was most recently an assistant coach under Oostendorp. It should ensure relegation in the remaining three games. “I would like to thank the club and those responsible for their trust. Now it is important to quickly regain stability as a team, look forward and get the necessary points that we need in the fight to stay in the league,” said Bauer.
Difficult remaining program – relegation duel with Essen
With a four point lead over SGS Essen in 13th place, the club women have their fate in their own hands. The next matchday will see a duel with third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt. Then there is a direct relegation duel against Essen. The club women cannot allow themselves to lose here, after all another tough challenge awaits Isabel Bauer’s team on the last match day with VfL Wolfsburg.
