A 21-year-old man from the municipality of Westerveld who was a teaching assistant at OBS Sprinkels primary school in Meppel was fired at the end of last year after the school received a signal of abuse a minor.

Niels Strolenberg, chairman of Stichting Promes, which includes primary school, cannot say that it is about the abuse of a student. “It happened outside the sphere of influence of the school and also happened outside the school.” The Public Prosecution Service (OM) Northern Netherlands cannot confirm whether it is a student.

After the school was notified of sexual abuse of the teaching assistant, action was immediately taken, says Strolenberg. The teacher was put on non-active and reporting was made to the Education and the Police Inspectorate. Not much later the man was fired. According to Dagblad van het Noorden the man worked in the superstructure of the school.

The school has taken a letter to parents. Strolenberg says that there is a lot of understanding from the parents for the response of the school board. “As a team, we are very shocked and take this extremely seriously. We are in mind with the victim and the parents.”

The case is now at the OM. The young Drent is suspected of sex offenses, but the OM does not want to elaborate on the nature of the offenses. The man was arrested at the time, but is now free pending the lawsuit. No date has been set for this.
