As of: October 18, 2023 11:46 a.m

The 2034 World Cup will take place in Asia. In addition to the well-known applicant Saudi Arabia, there have recently been rumors of a joint application between Indonesia and Australia. That’s off the table.

Indonesia’s considerations about a joint bid for the 2034 World Cup with Australia and other countries are off the table again. The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) assured Saudi Arabia of support on Wednesday (October 18, 2023). Apart from the desert state, no other country has so far officially announced an application.

Discussions with Australia about application

“Indonesia supports Saudi Arabia’s bid to host the 2034 World Cup”it said in a written statement statement of the association boss Erick Thohir. But the country is preparing “continues to prepare for its bid to host the post-2034 World Cup and other FIFA competitions”.

Last week Thohir reported talks with Australia about a possible joint application. The options included Indonesia and Australia with Malaysia and Singapore, but also Indonesia and Australia with New Zealand. However, Malaysia also supports the Saudi bid, according to association president Datuk Hamidin Amin.

2034 World Cup definitely in Asia

Due to the rotation principle, only possible hosts from Asia and Oceania are available for the 2034 tournament. The deadline for the world association FIFA is October 31st. After Saudi Arabia’s move, Australia emphasized that it wanted to continue looking into a possible application.

However, the Asian Confederation AFC supports the kingdom’s application, which has been criticized for human rights violations, among other things.
