Politicians dream out loud about a nuclear revival, but the reality is harsh. Leaked plans show that new nuclear power plants can only land in Doel or on an industrial site in Liège. Anyone who thinks that this will quickly solve our energy problems will be disappointed: the first new nuclear megawatt is not expected until 2039. Moreover, expert Joannes Laveyne (UGent) warns of a financial hangover and an overcrowded power grid. “In the short term, the focus should be on wind energy, but in the long term you can also consider nuclear energy.”
