2. Bundesliga: FC St. Pauli overruns 1. FC Magdeburg

Status: 15.08.2022 00:01

FC St. Pauli clearly beats the guests from 1. FC Magdeburg in the 2nd Bundesliga after an early double strike by Johannes Eggestein (3rd minute, 14th). Christian Titz’s team showed a disastrous performance in the first half and was still very well served with two goals conceded. After three changes, Magdeburg came out of the break better, but in the end Marcel Hartel (77th) put the lid on it to make it 3-0.

While Magdeburg slipped to 16th place with three points, FC St. Pauli moved up to Holstein Kiel in seventh place.

Dream start for FC St. Pauli – double pack from Johannes Eggestein

This is exactly how the neighborhood team had imagined the start of the game: Less than three minutes after kick-off, Paqarada overplayed Magdeburg’s weakened and very insecure defensive line with a no-look through ball to Eggestein. With the second contact, the 24-year-old ex-Bremer turned flat into the right corner (3rd).

Christian Titz made five changes after the 2-1 home defeat against KSV Holstein. Instead of Lawrence (suspended), Sechelmann, Gnaka, Kwarteng (all on the bench) and Atik (ligament injury), Bittroff, Cacutalua, El Hankouri, Léo Scienza and Brünker started.

3:0 was in the air for a long time

They were extremely impressed. In the next few minutes, Paqarada, Nemeth and Matanović all missed chances to make it 2-0 in the penalty area. Just when 1. FC Magdeburg seemed to find their way into the game, the next blow for the promoted team. Johannes Eggestein scored again (14′), this time via a header. Horror for the guests – 2-0 after less than a quarter of an hour.

Even a hat trick would have been possible – Eggestein in particular missed chances with the oppressively superior hosts. 1. FC Magdeburg had little room to breathe in the first half, but were lucky enough to concede only (!) two goals at the break. Christian Titz spoke on the sports show microphone of the “worst half” that FCM had ever played.

Magdeburg more powerful in the second half

With Gnaka, Kwarteng and Ito, Magdeburg’s coach Titz brought a breath of fresh air out of the dressing room, which blew his team forward. However, the Magdeburg team failed twice because of the aluminum. In the 47th minute, Condé hit the underside of the bar, four minutes later Kwarteng slammed the ball into the right post.

As a result, the game rippled along a bit. FC St. Pauli clearly took the pace out of the game and 1. FC Magdeburg took the wind out of their sails. Marcel Hartel’s goal from about six yards just under ten minutes before the end only underscored the balance of power in this game.

St. Pauli travels to Rostock on the next matchday on Sunday (21 August 2022, 1.30 p.m.), Magdeburg already plays against Hannover on Friday (19 August 2022, 6.30 p.m.).
