1930s on Texel: 45 minutes sailing with the Marsdiep

The famous Verkade album by JP Thijsse lures the first tourists to the ‘bird island’ Texel in the 1930s. There is only room for about ten cars on the boat and it is no less than 45 minutes by boat to the harbor of Oudeschild. “Going to Texel was still an adventure at that time,” says Texel resident Harry de Graaf in this episode of Ons Dorp.

This series shows what life used to be like in our province. Everyday life and special events have been recorded by amateur film-makers. The historical images have been collected in recent years by the Regional Archive Alkmaar and mostly come from private property. Some statues are unique and have never been seen before.
