19-year-old detainee stabbed to death in Breda youth prison

A 19-year-old detainee in Den Hey-Acker youth prison in Breda died on Friday after being stabbed. That reports the Breda police. Another 20-year-old prisoner was taken to hospital with injuries. Police have arrested an 18-year-old detainee and are currently investigating what happened.

The police reported earlier in the day that a report of a stabbing incident at the prison came in around 3 o’clock this afternoon. According to Broadcasting Brabant After the report, several police officers walked around the prison grounds with bulletproof vests. An air ambulance was also said to have landed.

In January, a 21-year-old man escaped from the youth prison in Breda. He had held prison staff hostage at gunpoint. Later in the day, he was killed in a firefight with the police in Belgium.

Young people up to the age of 23 are in a juvenile detention centre. They have been convicted or placed on a preventive basis pending trial. The average age at a placement is 17 years. The sentence that young people serve there lasts a maximum of two years.
