The cult trainer died at the age of 84. In the 1960s he led the team to the 2nd Bundesliga.
The “King of Giesing” is dead: third division football team 1860 Munich mourns the loss of club icon Karsten Wettberg. As the Lions announced, the former coach died on Sunday after a long illness at the age of 84. Wettberg remained unbeaten in 54 competitive games with the traditional club from February 1990 to June 1991 and was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga.
“The entire Löwen family is in deep mourning,” said the Munich team: “Karsten Wettberg was a coaching legend and a person who always stood up for others. He left deep traces far beyond the borders of Giesing – not just on the Lions.”
Wettberg was coach of the Sixties from 1990 to 1992, after promotion he left the club after a dispute with management. A short term as vice-president of the club followed between 2007 and 2008.
