16-year-old prodigy Andrejewa dismantles top star Jabeur

The only 16-year-old Mirra Andrejewa caused a big surprise at the Australian Open. Caroline Wozniacki, on the other hand, is out.

Tennis prodigy Mirra Andrejewa is causing a stir early on at the Australian Open. The 16-year-old Russian sensationally eliminated world number six Ons Jabeur (Tunisia) 6-0, 6-2 in just 54 minutes in her second round game – and was in impressive form against the three-time Grand Slam finalist. Andrejewa played for the juniors in Melbourne last year and reached the final.

“In the first set I played incredible tennis, I didn’t expect that from myself. I wanted to enjoy it, and that’s what I did,” said Andrejeva, who is already 47 in the world rankings and defeated a player from the top ten for the first time .

She was asked about Jabeur at the French Open in Paris in the summer, as the coaches of the two players know each other well. The Russian said at the time that it would be nice to train with her someday. Now there was even a playful dismantling.

Sabalenka continues easily, Wozniacki says goodbye

Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka easily made it into the third round in the evening. The Belarusian, who gave the young Hamburger Ella Seidel no chance at the start, defeated the 16-year-old Czech Brenda Fruhvirtova 6:3, 6:2.

Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki (33), however, missed out on making it to the third round. The Dane lost to the Russian Maria Timofejewa 6:1, 4:6, 1:6. Wozniacki, tournament winner in 2018, returned to the tour last year after a three-year baby break and reached the round of 16 at the US Open in New York.

US Open champion Coco Gauff won her second round match with some difficulty 7:6 (7:2), 6:2 against her American compatriot Caroline Dolehide and remains unbeaten in 2024. At the start of the year, the 19-year-old successfully defended her title at the WTA tournament in Auckland.
