Exactly 1219 brave people from Brabanders conquer the mythical mountain Alpe d’Huez in France on Thursday. This brings a quarter of all participants to Alpe d’HuZes from our province and Brabant is best represented. Omroep Brabant reports on Thursday all day by Alpe d’HuZes. From nine in the morning to five in the afternoon you can follow the event live on TV and online.

14 kilometers struggle on a hellish mountain with 21 turns. On this first Thursday of June, about five thousand participants climb cycling, running or walking the Alpe d’Huez, a mountain in the French Alps. The first will leave this 5th of June at half past four in the morning.

Record
Alpe d’HuZes is an annual event that collects as much money as possible for research into cancer and to improve the quality of life of people with cancer. The maximum number of registrations has been reached this year in a record time. Only two weeks and two days were needed to forgive the five thousand places.

Last year exactly 18,017,606 euros was raised, about a million more than a year earlier.

The mountain is populated on this special day by people with inspiring and emotional stories. Yet there are also participants who don’t get Alpe d’Huzes. Similarly Wicher Mars from Tilburg. He received euthanasia and cannot participate. His family now goes up the mountain for him. Watch his story in this video:

Breast rolls
Participants raise money in the craziest ways. For example, Ilse Neidsig baked real ‘breast rolls’ from Geldrop. She had breast cancer herself and with her sausage rolls in the form of a breast has already raised money for cancer research. Watch her story in this video:
