Henk Jan Reinders is already somewhat known in the Emmen area for his carbide cannon, which he expanded a little every year. But the latest version with 116 milk cans became even more famous, even beyond the provincial borders. A video of the blasting machine was viewed millions of times on New Year’s Eve.
When we called Henk Jan to tell us that his video had gone viral, he was surprised. “Am I that important then?”
“These are large amounts, but it doesn’t mean anything to me,” says the Emmen resident soberly.
And then we haven’t even mentioned the countless responses. Most of them are positive. In addition, the response was often “Let the Russians come!” Although Henk Jan does not agree with this: “No, let them stay in the East. No interest in it.”
One reaction sticks with him the most. Someone wrote under the video: “Brainless downie hit.” Something Henk Jan did not see coming. “Just let them come over here and I’ll explain. Because I don’t think they know what they’re saying.”
The cannon traditionally came into action on New Year’s Eve on the Schapenveenweg in Emmen. And if it is up to Henk Jan, that will be the case again next year. “If life allows it, then certainly. Persevere.”
He has continued to expand the device in recent years, but it is now almost impossible. “Maybe I will change something, but I don’t know yet. I don’t think he will get any bigger at first.”
